Leicester sits closer to East Midlands Airport than almost any other city in England. So why do so many people from LE1 to LE19 drive straight past it?
Because of where the flights actually go. East Midlands offers around 70 destinations across Europe and North Africa through the low-cost airlines based there, and roughly four million people used it in 2025 as the gateway to their holidays. That is a genuinely good regional airport for a week in Alicante or Faro.
It is not, however, a long-haul hub. Heathrow is. Heathrow has direct links to 214 destinations across 84 countries, and 2025 was its busiest year on record with more than 84.5 million passengers, keeping it Europe's busiest hub airport, with growth to around 85 million forecast for 2026.
For Leicester specifically, that matters more than it does for most cities. At the 2021 census the city's population was around 368,500, with 42% of residents born outside the UK and India the most common non-UK country of birth. Ahmedabad, Delhi, Mumbai, Nairobi, Dubai, Toronto — those journeys start at Heathrow, not Castle Donington. Add the business travel coming out of the city's professional services and manufacturing base, and you have a steady flow of people who need to get 100 miles south reliably, often with three suitcases and two children.
Rail versus private hire: the leg nobody budgets for
People compare the train fare to the transfer fare and stop there. That comparison is incomplete, because the train does not go to Heathrow.
The fastest Leicester to London St Pancras service takes 1 hour 3 minutes, with four services an hour — two fast and two semi-fast via Kettering. Genuinely quick. But St Pancras is in the wrong part of London. Heathrow's own guidance puts the St Pancras to Heathrow leg at between 45 minutes and 1 hour 15 minutes depending on the route: the Piccadilly line runs direct and takes just over an hour, the Elizabeth line takes around 55 minutes with a change, and the Heathrow Express route via Paddington averages around 45 minutes but requires changing trains.

Rail is a reasonable choice if you are travelling alone, light, and outside the rush. For families, early departures, or anyone with hold luggage, an airport transfer is the simpler answer.

What time should you actually leave Leicester?
This is where most missed flights begin. Heathrow recommends arriving three hours before departure if you are travelling out of Europe, and two hours ahead for UK and European flights. The airport has also asked passengers not to turn up significantly earlier than those timings, since very early arrivals add to terminal congestion.
Those are arrival times at the terminal. The journey is separate, and it is not a fixed 100 minutes — the M1 and the M25 behave very differently at 4am and at 4pm.
